PREFACE

PREFACE

In an era characterized by the continuous transformation of social structures, individual experiences, and systems of meaning, the social sciences strive to understand human beings and society from multidimensional perspectives enriched by diverse disciplinary contributions. Drawing upon fields such as sociology, sociology of religion, philosophy of religion, psychology, and social work, this volume seeks to address the fundamental issues of contemporary society through an interdisciplinary approach.

In the first chapter, Hanife Çalışkan Ceylan examines the socioeconomic dimensions of drug-related offenses in her study entitled “The Socioeconomic Dimensions of Drug Offenses.” By analyzing the effects of structural factors such as poverty, unemployment, social exclusion, and economic inequality on criminal behavior, the study demonstrates that addiction and drug-related crimes cannot be explained solely in terms of individual choices, but must also be understood within broader social and economic contexts.

In the second chapter, Ülkü Koçak revisits David Hume’s critique of miracles in “Rethinking Miracles: A Regularity-Based Response to Humean Skepticism.” Addressing one of the central debates in the philosophy of religion, the study reevaluates the concept of miracles within the framework of the regularity theory, offering a critical perspective on the relationship between faith, reason, and knowledge.

In his chapter entitled “The Spiritual Needs of Nurses and the Activation of Spiritual Resources,” Faruk Kanger explores the spiritual needs of nurses and their implications for professional life. Emphasizing the significance of spirituality in healthcare settings, the study highlights the relationship between individual well-being and professional resilience.

In “An Assessment of Time Perception, Volunteering Experience, and Sustainability in Modern Society,” Mehmet Ata Mirzaoğlu and Halim Toğa investigate the interconnections between perceptions of time, experiences of volunteering, and sustainability in contemporary society. The study provides a multidimensional analysis of the role of volunteering in fostering individual responsibility, social solidarity, and the construction of sustainable social structures.

In the final chapter, Hanife Çalışkan Ceylan addresses the hidden psychosocial dimensions of juvenile delinquency in her study entitled “Invisible Hands: Psychosocial Dynamics Behind Child Delinquency.” Examining juvenile delinquency through the lenses of family structure, environmental factors, economic conditions, and social relationships, the study underscores the importance of preventive and protective social policies.

Bringing together scholars from diverse disciplines, this volume creates a common academic platform for discussions on crime, spirituality, volunteering, time, religion, and social transformation. It is our sincere hope that the book will open new avenues of inquiry for academics, researchers, and readers interested in the social sciences, while contributing to the advancement of interdisciplinary scholarship.

We would like to express our gratitude to all the authors and everyone whose efforts made this volume possible. We sincerely hope that this work will make a meaningful contribution to the academic community.
