PREFACE

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a dynamic specialty that encompasses a broad clinical spectrum, ranging from trauma and implantology to temporomandibular joint disorders and cleft surgery. Rapid technological advancements, improvements in imaging modalities, digital planning systems, and innovations in biomaterials have significantly enhanced the predictability and safety of contemporary surgical practice. However, the increasing volume of scientific literature has made structured and systematic access to reliable information essential for clinicians.

This book has been prepared with the contributions of research assistants, assistant professors, and associate professors working in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. It aims to compile frequently encountered clinical problems and contemporary treatment approaches into a single, practical resource.

The volume includes minimally invasive approaches for temporomandibular joint disorders, advanced implant rehabilitation techniques such as zygomatic, pterygoid, transdental, and subperiosteal implants, as well as clinically significant topics including alveolar cleft repair, oral premalignant lesions, and coronectomy in third molar surgery. These subjects are discussed comprehensively in light of current evidence and clinical experience.

In addition, systematic and bibliometric analyses on orthognathic surgery—focusing on airway outcomes, surgical predictability, complications, and patient-centered results—provide readers with a broader scientific perspective on the evolving research landscape of orthognathic practice.

The book also addresses increasingly relevant topics such as medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and emerging adjunctive approaches including neural therapy, offering a holistic reference for contemporary practice.

The primary objective of this book is to provide a clear, practical, and up-to-date reference for residents and experienced clinicians. Each chapter integrates indications, technical considerations, potential complications, and current perspectives to support informed clinical decision-making.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all contributing authors for their valuable efforts and hope that this book will serve as a useful resource for clinicians, researchers, and students. As the editor, I believe that this work will contribute meaningfully to both clinical practice and academic development.
